Veg shortages in the UK cause an unexpected rise in inflation.

March 23, 2023

According to official statistics, UK inflation unexpectedly increased last month as vegetable shortages caused food prices to rise at their fastest rate in more than 45 years.

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rate increased to 10.4% in February from 10.1% in January, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Most economists predicted that the CPI would decrease to 9.9% in February.

Price inflation for food, including non-alcoholic beverages, increased rapidly from 16.8% to 18.3%. The recent shortages of vegetables like tomatoes and peppers were a major factor in the skyrocketing price of food.
