The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Senftenberg infections linked to certain Jif peanut butter products produced at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky.

CDC’s review of epidemiological information indicates that five out of five people reported consuming peanut butter and four of the five people specifically reported consuming different varieties of Jif brand peanut butter prior to becoming ill. FDA conducted Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis on an environmental sample collected at the Lexington, KY, J.M. Smucker Company facility 2010. The analysis shows that this 2010 environmental sample matches the strain causing illnesses in this current outbreak. Epidemiologic evidence indicates that Jif brand peanut butter produced in the J.M. Smucker Company facility located in Lexington, KY, is the likely cause of illnesses in this outbreak.

In a statement to Delish, Jif’s producer, J.M. Smucker Co., described the recall as “voluntary” and in partnership with FDA and CFIA. The outbreak is currently undergoing investigation, but the company says the incident was isolated to its Lexington, Kentucky manufacturing facility and does not impact any of its other peanut-butter-producing facilities.

J.M. Smucker Company has voluntarily recalled certain Jif brand peanut butter products that have the lot code numbers between 1274425 – 2140425, only if the first seven digits end with 425 (manufactured in Lexington, KY).

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that 14 people across 12 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Senftenberg.

There is great concern that consumers may have unused portions of the implicated peanut butter in their homes

More peanut butter products are being recalled this week because of the risk of salmonella contamination, following recall of Jif Peanut butter on May Month from American Market. J.M. Smuckers recalled several Jif products in May due to potential contamination with salmonella. There have been 16 illnesses and 2 hospitalisations associated with the outbreak.

F&S Produce recalled a limited quantity of its Protein Power Snacks on June first week, and  Taharka Brothers recalled its peanut butter cup ice cream on 2nd week of June

The Protein Power Snacks each contain a 0.75 ounce cup of Jif peanut butter, according to a company announcement posted on the FDA website. The product was distributed at Walgreens stores in New York and New Jersey, and it has been pulled from the shelves, according to the release. The last lot affected is dated “Best By: 05/28/22” on the front label.

Affected Taharka Brothers ice cream was distributed by grocery stores, restaurants, “scoop shops,” and through direct delivery in the D.C. and Maryland area between March 1 and May 28.

No illnesses have been linked to the protein snack or the ice cream, but the peanut butter used to produce them does have associated illnesses.

Consumers can use the following label information to determine whether they have the recalled peanut butter. If consumers have products matching the above description in their possession, they should dispose of it immediately.
