The outbreak, suspected to be caused by norovirus infection, has affected at least 31 individuals, with the first case reported on November 30.
County investigators are currently examining various factors, including food storage, preparation practices, and the potential presence of norovirus at the restaurant. Symptoms reported by affected individuals, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, align with those commonly associated with norovirus.
Ashley Whittington from Wake County Environmental Services expressed concern about the possibility of a customer or employee shedding the virus, leading to contamination within the restaurant. Given the heightened risk during this time of the year, health officials recommended the temporary closure of Sushi Nine, which took effect on December 5. The restaurant was permitted to reopen on December 7 after addressing the identified issues.
The Wake County health department received its first complaint about the restaurant on December 1, followed by additional complaints in the subsequent days, prompting swift action to protect public health.
Individuals who dined at Sushi Nine between November 30 and December 4 and subsequently experienced illness are urged to report their symptoms to the Wake County Communicable Disease Hotline at 919-257-4462.
Norovirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, muscle aches, fever, and headache. The onset typically occurs 12 to 48 hours after exposure, with symptoms lasting one to three days.
