Flesh-Eating Bacteria from Raw Oysters Linked to Death of a Missouri Man.

June 15, 2023

A 54-year-old Missouri man passed away after consuming a flesh-eating bacterium while eating raw oysters. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health revealed in a press statement that the man passed away from the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus after consuming oysters from Manchester’s The Fruit Stand & Seafood. Vibriosis symptoms can include cramping in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills.

Investigators from the health department are looking for the oysters that were tainted with the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria and have advised locals not to consume any that they had recently purchased from Manchester’s The Fruit Stand & Seafood.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus affects 80,000 people a year and results in 100 fatalities in the US. The CDC advised individuals to wash their hands well before handling raw shellfish or to avoid eating it altogether. The CDC cautions that if you have an open wound, you run the risk of contracting Vibrio vulnificus by swimming in warm, salty water.
