In a precautionary move just before Christmas Day, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a recall for four types of Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese due to a potential E. coli contamination. The affected varieties include Mrs Kirkham’s Mild and Creamy Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Tasty Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Mature Lancashire, and Mrs Kirkham’s Smoked Lancashire.
The FSA announced the recall on Christmas Eve, expressing concerns that the cheeses might be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The symptoms associated with this organism are flu-like and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, nausea, and diarrhea. In rare cases, the infection can lead to severe complications such as meningitis.
Individuals who have purchased the affected products are advised to store them safely, fully wrapped, and ensure they are not in contact with other foods. Additionally, the FSA recommends thorough handwashing and cleaning of equipment, utensils, and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled cheeses.
Customers can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Point of sale notices will be displayed where the products were sold, providing information about the recall and instructions for those who have purchased the items.
Dr. Babak Ashrafi from Asda Online Doctor shared advice on storing Christmas food, emphasizing the importance of using common sense. While it is generally safe to keep food for a few days after Christmas if refrigerated properly, individuals are urged to exercise caution. Dr. Ashrafi highlighted the risk of bacterial growth, particularly mentioning salmonella and E. coli, which can cause severe illnesses. Proper refrigeration and disposal of any leftovers that appear or smell unsafe are recommended.
As consumers navigate the holiday season, health officials stress the significance of food safety practices to prevent foodborne illnesses and ensure a healthy and happy celebration.
