In response to a concerning incident at Countdown Pukekohe South, where a large mouse was observed eating cereal amongst store products, New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) has initiated an investigation.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, prompted immediate attention from both customers and authorities after a photo capturing the plump rodent amidst bags of Ricies cereal circulated online. NZFS Deputy Director-General Vincent Arbuckle confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating that the agency has contacted Woolworths, the parent company of Countdown, for further details.
“While it’s not uncommon for rodents to find their way into supermarkets, they should not come into contact with food or be visible to consumers,” emphasized Arbuckle. He underscored the regulatory requirement for all food businesses to maintain pest management plans to mitigate such risks.
Witnesses recounted the shock and disgust upon encountering the mouse, with one shopper describing how a passerby appeared on the verge of nausea. Prompt action was taken by store staff upon notification, swiftly removing the rodent from the premises.
A spokesperson for Woolworths acknowledged the incident and assured the public of their commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly. They emphasized the importance of maintaining hygienic standards within their stores and reiterated collaboration with pest control authorities and NZFS.
This occurrence follows a similar incident at Dunedin South Countdown, where nearly twenty rats were discovered inside the premises. The store underwent a month-long closure for pest control measures before reopening to the public in February 2024. Recent reports of rodents in other New Zealand supermarkets highlight the ongoing challenge of pest management within the food retail sector.
As investigations continue, customers are advised to remain vigilant, and food businesses are urged to uphold stringent hygiene and pest control practices to ensure consumer safety. Further updates on this matter will be provided as the investigation progresses.
