Health Canada Approves Sale of Animal-Free Milk Protein, Paving the Way for Innovative Dairy Alternatives

February 21, 2024

Health Canada has granted approval for the sale of Remilk’s animal-free milk protein, marking a significant milestone in Canada’s alternative protein landscape. Remilk’s beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) protein, derived from a genetically modified yeast strain through precision fermentation, has received a “Letter of No Objection” from Health Canada, affirming its safety for food use.

Canada becomes the fourth country, following the United States, Singapore, and Israel, to permit the sale and use of Remilk’s cow-free milk protein. This approval opens the door to a range of animal-free products, including nutritional bars, beverages, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, and plant-based drinks. Remilk asserts that these alternatives will offer the same taste and texture as traditional milk, while being free of lactose and cholesterol and boasting a smaller environmental footprint compared to conventional dairy production.

Ori Cohavi, Remilk’s co-founder and CTO, emphasized the significance of regulatory approvals in expanding market opportunities and providing reassurance to both the industry and consumers. The company views this approval as a pivotal moment, enabling substantial market entry and offering consumers a dairy experience without the environmental and health-related drawbacks associated with traditional dairy.

Precision fermentation, the method used by Remilk to produce its BLG protein, involves utilizing microbial fermentation to create specific ingredients. This process, rooted in traditional fermentation methods, is hailed for its potential to significantly reduce land, feed, water, and energy consumption compared to conventional dairy production.

Remilk’s innovative approach aligns with the growing demand for dairy alternatives in the global market, which is projected to reach $90 billion by 2030, according to Research and Markets data. Aviv Wolff, Remilk’s co-founder and CEO, expressed pride in being the first to enter the Canadian market with an opportunity to deliver a sustainable and unparalleled dairy experience.

While the protein is not intended for direct consumer sale or use in infant formula, the approval sets the stage for Remilk to introduce a new generation of food that combines deliciousness and nutrition with increased sustainability, kindness to the planet, and compassion for animals.
