Supply shortages, high energy costs, weather disruptions were all the factors responsible for restricting purchases of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers in the UK. Farmers were struggling with high energy costs, which has reduced their ability to grow fruits and vegetables in heat. Weather disruptions in Southern Europe and Northern Africa have worsened the situation. Heavy rains in Morocco and a cold spell in Spain are among the adverse conditions.
The supermarket restrictions were put in place to ensure that as many customers as possible could get what they needed. But Lidl Announced that from 13th march 2023, all the restrictions/limits will be lifted. Not only Lidl but also Asda also removed the limit on the purchase of cauliflower, raspberries, broccoli, and salad bags except tomatoes and pepper (three per customer).
Cucumber restrictions will be lifted at Morrisons, but the supermarket will continue to limit sales of tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers to two per person. Now as the restriction will be lifted there will be high demand of fresh produce but Lidl says, they have enough availability to meet higher demand of consumers. And all the supplies will be expected to be normal soon.
