FAO launches a comprehensive and accessible toolbox for food safety compliance.

June 9, 2023

A useful, and easily accessible toolkit has been released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to assist all those working in the food industry in adhering to global food hygiene standards. This is based on the Codex Alimentarius, with the goal of safeguarding consumer health and advancing ethical business practices in the food industry. The toolkit was made available in English, French, and Spanish.

Through an FAO website, the toolbox converts the comprehensive set of standards and guidelines governing Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) into information that is simple to understand. For instance, the website has been created to function well on portable mobile devices, which are much more common than desktops in several developing nations. The difficulties faced by small-scale food producers and company owners in low- and middle-income nations were given special consideration.

The main goal is to provide all food industry operators with a tool that enables them to better collaborate with local food safety authorities to produce, process, and distribute safe food, on farms or the value chain, regardless of size or location. In addition to serving individuals with institutional roles, the toolkit also serves academic institutions, government agencies, and organizations that promote capacity-building.

As 600 million people worldwide suffer from foodborne illnesses each year. FAO is assisting in making sure that everyone has access to healthy food. Food safety hazards rise when there is a shortage of food. The recommendations from FAO and WHO serves as the scientific foundation for Codex Alimentarius standards.
