The FDA is looking into a multistate outbreak of E. coli O121:H19 infections connected to Earth Grown frozen falafel along with the CDC, state, and local partners. Based on CDC epidemiologic data and interviews with state and local public health professionals, 15 of the 18 respondents examined reported shopping at ALDI stores. 6 of the 15 people who said they shopped at ALDI supermarkets said they ate frozen falafel because of Earth Grown brand that they bought a week before becoming ill. Earth Grown frozen falafel was discontinued by ALDI on October 6, 2022.

Cuisine Innovations, the company that makes Earth Grown frozen falafel, started a voluntary recall on October 6, 2022. Earth Grown vegan traditional falafel and garlic & herb falafel, which are distributed and sold only by ALDI, are among the recalled goods. After June 24, 2021, no one should consume, sell, or serve the recalled Earth Grown Traditional Falafel or Garlic & Herb Falafel offered only by ALDI. Consumers should check their freezers for these products because they were sold frozen and have a long shelf life of 18 months even though they are no longer for sale. Do not consume or serve any recalled frozen falafel that you may have in your freezer. Consumers should speak with their healthcare professional if they experience any symptoms
