The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a significant update on the ongoing Listeria monocytogenes outbreak associated with Boar’s Head deli meats. Since the last update on August 8, 2024, there have been an additional 14 illnesses and 5 deaths, bringing the total to 57 cases across 18 states.

Current Situation:

  • Total Cases: 57 confirmed cases
  • Total Deaths: 9 deaths
  • Hospitalization: All 57 patients have required hospitalization
  • States Affected: Illinois, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico, South Carolina, among others

Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback investigations have identified deli meats sliced at counters as the primary source of contamination. Specific findings include:

  • Listeria Detection: Positive tests for Listeria monocytogenes in Boar’s Head deli meats from Maryland and New York.
  • Product Details: Affected products include Boar’s Head liverwurst and potentially other deli meats with “sell by” dates extending into October 2024.
  • Product Codes: Look for USDA inspection codes such as “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” on labels.

Public Health Advisory:

  • Recall Action: Boar’s Head has recalled over 7 million pounds of deli meats. Consumers should discard any recalled products immediately.
  • Cleaning: Thoroughly clean any surfaces, containers, and refrigerators that may have come into contact with the recalled meats.
  • Symptoms: Monitor for symptoms of Listeria infection, which may include vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, headache, and neck stiffness. Symptoms can develop up to 70 days after exposure.

Vulnerable Groups:

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness or complications. Pregnant women should be particularly vigilant as infections can lead to premature delivery or stillbirth.

For More Information:

  • Recall List: A detailed list of recalled products is available here.
  • Medical Advice: Anyone who has consumed the recalled products and develops symptoms should seek medical treatment and inform their healthcare providers about possible Listeria exposure.

The CDC and state health departments continue to investigate the outbreak and work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) to ensure public saftey.
