In a heartbreaking incident that occurred on August 15, 2020, 16-year-old Rohan Godhania of Ealing, west London, lost his life due to a rare medical condition triggered by the consumption of a protein shake. His mother, Pushpa Godhania, is now advocating for the addition of health warnings on protein shake products to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

After drinking a protein shake, Rohan fell seriously ill and suffered irreversible brain damage. His cause of death was later identified as a late onset of the rare disease ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, a urea cycle disorder that prevents the proper breakdown of ammonia in the bloodstream. Such disorders can be triggered by a sudden spike in protein consumption.

After Rohan’s inquest, the senior coroner Tom Osborne stated that the protein shake had “triggered an acute reaction” in the teenager, indicating that he would be sending a report to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to consider adding warnings to high-protein drinks and supplements. This report would propose prominent labels cautioning about the potentially fatal risks that ingesting high levels of protein could pose to those with undiagnosed urea cycle disorders.

The protein shake that Rohan consumed was identified as the USN Core Series 100% Premium Whey Protein, containing 23g of protein per serving. Although the product label advised consulting a doctor before use if a medical condition was present, Rohan’s OTC disorder was undiagnosed.

Pushpa Godhania has now appealed to the manufacturer, Ultimate Sports Nutrition (USN), to include an additional warning on their product, urging consumers to seek medical attention if they experience vomiting or other symptoms. She believes that simple language can effectively communicate the potential risks to the general public. During the inquest, Dr. Christopher Carswell, a consultant neurologist, also supported the need for clear health warnings to help consumers make informed decisions.

Rohan’s tragic death has highlighted the need for improved labeling and awareness regarding the potential hazards of high-protein products for individuals with certain medical conditions. As investigations continue, Rohan’s family hopes that their efforts will prevent further loss of life due to similar circumstances. The company USN is yet to respond to the call for additional warnings on their products.
