“Statewide Recall: Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese Contaminated with Salmonella Prompts Urgent Quarantine”

August 5, 2023 United States of America

RAW CHEESE — RAW FARM usa

In a recent development, California State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones has issued a statewide recall and quarantine order for “Raw Farm Cheddar,” a product produced and packaged by Raw Farm LLC of Fresno County, CA. The recall is prompted by state testing that revealed the presence of Salmonella contamination in the cheese.

The affected product is “Raw Farm Cheddar” packaged in one-pound blocks, with the following details:

  • Code Date: BEST BY: 03/16/2024
  • Batch Number: 20230517-1

Consumers and retailers are strongly advised to take immediate action in response to this recall. Consumers should dispose of any of the recalled cheese that may be present in their refrigerators. Retailers are instructed to promptly remove the product from their shelves.

It is important to note that as of now, no illnesses related to the consumption of this product have been reported.

Background:

Raw Farm LLC, formerly known as Organic Pastures, has faced regulatory actions in the past. In a federal court order last week, the company was directed to adhere to decisions made by the FDA for the next 60 months. This order includes specific requirements for audits, labeling, and the engagement of an independent “labeling expert.”

The FDA had initiated legal action in March, seeking to revisit a 2008 litigation due to alleged violations by Raw Farm LLC of a Permanent Injunction issued in April 2010. This injunction had imposed limitations on the distribution of unapproved drugs, misbranded food, raw milk, and raw milk products intended for human consumption

Salmonella Contamination:

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) conducted routine sampling at the Raw Farm LLC manufacturing and packaging facility, leading to the detection of Salmonella bacteria. While no cases of illness have been reported so far, it is crucial to be aware of the symptoms associated with Salmonella infection. These symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache

Consumers and retailers are urged to take immediate action in response to this recall to ensure public safety. Monitoring for updates and adhering to food safety guidelines are essential during this situation.
