Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc., based in River Falls, Wisconsin, has issued an urgent recall of its 5-ounce packages of Alfalfa and Alfalfa Onion Sprouts due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can cause severe health issues, especially in vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Listeria infection can lead to serious complications such as high fever, severe headaches, nausea, and diarrhea. Pregnant women should be particularly cautious, as Listeria may cause miscarriages or stillbirths. While no illnesses have been reported to date, the company urges caution.
The potential contamination was identified during routine testing by Jack and the Green Sprouts. As a precautionary measure, the production of the affected sprouts has been halted while the source of the contamination is investigated.
