BrightFarms, a leading supplier of fresh produce, has initiated a voluntary recall of its spinach grown by supplier Element Farms at the Pompton Plains, New Jersey farm. The recall is prompted by potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious health issues, particularly in vulnerable populations.

In addition to the spinach recall, BrightFarms is also voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of four salad kit products produced at its Selinsgrove, PA facility due to potential cross-contamination. The affected products were distributed to retailers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The recalled products, which come in 4-oz clear plastic containers, include:

  1. BrightFarms Baby Spinach (3.5oz) – UPC: 8-57062-00492-3, Facility Code: PEN8, Best-By Dates: 1/11/2024, 1/13/2024, 1/18/2024, 1/20/2024

  5. BrightFarms Southwest Chipotle (5.85oz) – UPC: 8-50051-82500-4, Facility Code: PEN4, Best-By Date: 1/15/2024

No illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported to date.

The spinach recall was initiated following a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes during routine sampling conducted by Element Farms. Due to potential cross-contamination at the Selinsgrove facility, BrightFarms is taking precautionary measures and recalling the specified salad kit products.

As a response to the recall, BrightFarms has temporarily suspended the distribution of spinach grown by Element Farms.

Retailers have been directed to remove all affected products from their shelves. Consumers who have purchased the recalled items are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should discard the products or return them to the place of purchase with a photo of the product or receipt for a full refund.
