Widespread Recall of Spinach Products Due to Listeria Contamination

June 30, 2024 USA

Baby Spinach

Solata Foods LLC has issued an urgent recall of multiple spinach products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall includes several brands: Solata, Gaia, Full Circle, Farmer Direct, Uncle Vinny’s, Bogopa, and Bulk. This action follows a discovery by New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors, who found Listeria monocytogenes in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa “Fresh Spinach.”

The recalled spinach products, distributed locally in retail stores, come in various sizes and brands.

All packages have lot numbers #40606 and #11006, with expiration dates of 6/20/24 and 6/24/24. The products include Solata Spinach (10×9 Bag), Gaia Organic Spring Mix (6×1.7 Clam), Full Circle Organic Spring Mix (6×10 Clam), Full Circle Organic Baby Spinach (6×10 Clam), and many others. Notably, products branded under Solata, Gaia, Full Circle, Farmer Direct, Uncle Vinny’s, and Bulk in various sizes such as 10×9 Bag, 6×10 Clam, 8×5 Clam, 9×9 Bag, and 2×1.5 Bags are affected. UPC codes for these products vary but are listed to aid in identification.

Health Effects Of Listeria Monocytogens

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, but their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or stillbirth.

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you have consumed any of these products and experience symptoms of Listeria infection, seek medical attention immediately and inform your healthcare provider about potential Listeria exposure.
