About Campylobacter jejuni

Campylobacter jejuni is a bacterium commonly found in raw or undercooked poultry, unpasteurised milk, and contaminated water. It is one of the most common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Symptoms of Campylobacter infection, also known as campylobacteriosis, typically appear within 2 to 5 days after exposure and can include:

  • Diarrhea (often bloody)
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle pain

In severe cases, Campylobacter infection can lead to complications such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing muscle weakness and paralysis.

Preventive Measures

To reduce the risk of illness from consuming raw unpasteurised milk, it is essential to always heat the milk to a safe temperature as recommended. Consumers should also practice good hygiene and proper food handling to prevent cross-contamination with other foods.
