The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated the recall of Sun Noodle’s S&S Cup Saimin—Noodles With Soup & Garnishes to a Class I status, indicating the highest level of risk. This decision follows the discovery of undeclared egg, a major allergen, in the product.

Recall Details

Initially issued in May, the recall affects products distributed in Hawaii, California, Nevada, and Utah. The recall has been reclassified under FDA health guidelines due to the serious health risks posed to individuals with egg allergies. A Class I recall is designated when there is a “reasonable probability” that exposure to the product could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Previously, the recall had not been classified under any of the FDA’s three levels. The FDA’s classification system includes:

  • Class I: High probability of causing serious adverse health consequences or death.
  • Class II: May cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
  • Class III: Unlikely to cause adverse health consequences.

Affected Products

The recalled products include those produced and sold in 2023 and 2024:

  • 2023: Lot codes 1623129 — 1623365 (May 9, 2023, to December 31, 2023)
  • 2024: Lot codes 1624001 — 1624129 (January 1, 2024, to May 8, 2024)

Sun Noodle stated that the egg white powder ingredient was limited to the fish cake within the soup and noodle cup and that the distribution of this product was very limited. Consumers who purchased the affected S&S Cup Saimin should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Sun Noodle has apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized their commitment to product safety and quality.

Allergen Risks

Eggs are one of the nine major allergens identified by the FDA. The others include milk, soybeans, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and sesame. Consumption of these allergens by individuals with food allergies can lead to serious or life-threatening reactions.

Common allergic reactions to food include hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and respiratory issues such as coughing or wheezing. More severe reactions, known as anaphylaxis, can cause throat swelling, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness, requiring immediate medical attention.

Consumers are advised to stay informed through FDA updates and ensure they avoid the recalled products to prevent health risks. For further information and updates, visit the FDA’s official website.
