Mindblow Energy Drinks Recalled Over Potentially Harmful Ingredient

Presence of Mucuna Pruriens Extract (98% L-Dopa) Prompts Immediate Recall

Anti-Parkinson's medication found in Canadian energy drink - North Shore News

Mindblow brand energy drinks are being urgently recalled from the market due to the discovery of non-permitted ingredients, including Mucuna Pruriens Extract containing a high concentration of L-Dopa (98%), which could potentially endanger consumers’ health. The extract is commonly used in prescription anti-Parkinson’s medications and poses serious health risks when consumed unknowingly.

What is L-Dopa?

Levodopa has the potential to interact with medications commonly prescribed for high blood pressure. Furthermore, pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take it, those planning to become pregnant, or individuals with certain medical conditions, including narrow-angle glaucoma, untreated heart, liver, kidney, lung, or hormonal diseases. A history of melanoma or contraindicated use of specific drugs such as isoproterenol, amphetamines, or epinephrine further exacerbates the potential risks associated with L-Dopa consumption.

How does it affect our body?

Side effects of L-Dopa consumption requiring immediate medical attention include involuntary and uncontrollable movements of various body parts, such as the face, eyelids, mouth, tongue, neck, arms, hands, or legs. Severe and persistent nausea or vomiting, irregular heartbeat or chest fluttering, dizziness upon standing quickly, and unusual changes in mood or behavior are additional side effects that necessitate medical intervention.

What consumers can do?

In light of this recall, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) urges consumers to check their products for any potential signs of the non-permitted ingredient and to abstain from consuming or distributing the affected energy drinks. Additionally, if any instances of the recalled products being sold are observed, individuals are encouraged to report these cases to the CFIA for further investigation.
