Parsram Foods Pty Ltd is recalling the following McCain products due to potential chemical contamination (ethylene oxide). These products have been sold at Indian Grocery Stores in NSW, ACT, QLD, VIC, and SA.

Problem:

  • Potential chemical contamination with ethylene oxide.

Health Effects of Ethylene Oxide:

Ethylene oxide is a chemical used in various industrial processes, including the sterilization of medical equipment and the production of other chemicals. It is a colorless, flammable gas with a sweet odor and is known to have several health effects on humans:

  • Acute Exposure:
    • Respiratory Effects: Inhalation can cause respiratory irritation, including coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
    • Neurological Effects: Acute exposure can lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, unconsciousness.
    • Skin and Eye Irritation: Direct contact can cause skin irritation and blistering, as well as eye irritation and conjunctivitis.
  • Chronic Exposure:
    • Cancer: Long-term exposure is associated with an increased risk of cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the breast and stomach. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies EtO as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans.

    • Neurological Effects: Long-term exposure can affect the central nervous system, leading to symptoms such as memory loss, numbness, and muscle weakness.
