Pacific Trellis Fruit, LLC has announced a voluntary recall of 4,872 cases of Malichita brand whole cantaloupe due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall comes in response to the ongoing FDA investigation into an outbreak associated with Malichita brand cantaloupes. Salmonella can cause severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (potentially bloody), and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The affected cantaloupes, distributed between October 18th – 26th, were sold in California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, and Canada through various retail supermarkets. The whole cantaloupes are packaged in corrugated cartons, with a price look-up sticker labeled “Malichita.” Specific product details include:

  • Item Description: Whole Cantaloupe
  • PLU: 4050
  • Lot Codes: 21651, 21699, 21775, 21787, 21870

While several illnesses related to this outbreak have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States and Canada, Pacific Trellis Fruit has not received any reports of illness to date.

Consumers who have purchased these cantaloupes are advised not to consume them and should dispose of the products. For additional information, customers can contact Pacific Trellis Fruit at 323-859-9600, Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM PST.
