Listeria Contamination: Old Europe Cheese issuing a voluntary recall of its Brie cheeses

Picture of Saint Louis Brie wedge”

Because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, Old Europe Cheese, Inc. of Benton Harbor, Michigan is voluntarily recalling all of its Brie cheeses. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can infect people with weakened immune systems, including young children, the elderly, and frail people, and cause serious and occasionally fatal infections. While listeria infection can cause high fevers, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea in healthy people, it can also result in miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Products made with St Louis Brie are being recalled by Swiss American after Old Europe Cheese, Inc. warned the company that the cheese might be tainted with Listeria monocytogenes. This is a portion of a larger, voluntary recall initiated by the manufacturer.
