A recall has been issued for several batches of Old Irish Creamery Cheese cheddar cheese products due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products include a range of flavored cheddar cheeses, such as Irish Cheddar Cheese with Irish Whiskey, Irish Cheddar Cheese with Irish Porter, and Cheddar Cheese with Sriracha. All the recalled products originate from Ireland and carry the approval number IE 1059 EC.
Listeria contamination poses a significant health risk, particularly to pregnant women, newborns, elderly individuals, and people with weakened immune systems. The infection can lead to mild flu-like symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications.
Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause symptoms like mild flu-like illness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare instances, it can lead to more serious complications such as meningitis or sepsis. Vulnerable groups—including pregnant women (where it can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth), babies, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems—are particularly at risk.
The incubation period for Listeria infection is typically around 3 weeks, but symptoms can appear anywhere between 3 to 70 days after exposure.
