KRBL Limited, the manufacturer of India Gate Basmati Rice, has initiated a recall of its 1.1-kilogram rice packets due to pesticide concerns. The recall involves the “India Gate Pure Basmati Rice Feast Rozzana Super Value Pack (10% Extra)” product, packed in January 2024, with an expiration date of December 2025. This decision was made after it was found that the levels of two pesticides, Thiamethoxam and Isoproturon, exceeded permissible limits. These pesticides, when consumed in excessive amounts, pose potential risks to kidney and liver health.

KRBL, one of the largest exporters of Basmati rice and a significant supplier in India, has stated that the affected packets come from a single batch packed in one day. The company responded promptly after being alerted to the issue and has immediately initiated a recall to protect consumer health.

Affected Products:

The affected product in this recall is the “India Gate Pure Basmati Rice Feast Rozzana Super Value Pack (10% Extra),” which comes in 1.1-kilogram packets. These packets were packed in January 2024 and have an expiration date set for December 2025. The recall was prompted after it was discovered that the rice contained excessive levels of two pesticides, Thiamethoxam and Isoproturon, both of which can pose health risks if consumed in large quantities. The recall applies to a specific batch that was packed on a single date.

Health Risk:The pesticides Thiamethoxam and Isoproturon, found in the recalled rice packets, can potentially lead to adverse health effects if consumed over time. According to health experts, prolonged exposure to these chemicals can negatively impact kidney and liver function. While the company emphasized that the affected batch was small and packed on a single day, consumers who have purchased the recalled product are urged not to consume it.

What to Do:

  • Consumers: If you have purchased the affected India Gate rice packets, do not consume the product. Return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund or properly dispose of it. Monitor your health if you have already consumed the product and seek medical advice if you experience any symptoms.
  • Retailers: Ensure that the affected products are removed from store shelves immediately. Discontinue sales and distribution of the recalled rice packets and follow proper recall procedures.

Company’s Response:

KRBL Limited has reinforced its internal quality control and due diligence processes to prevent future incidents. According to the official spokesperson, the company’s facilities follow industry-leading practices for processing, aging, and packaging, which do not involve the use of chemicals or pesticides. KRBL also stressed the complexity of pesticide control, noting that rice being an agricultural commodity means pesticide levels are controlled primarily at the farm level. The company has long worked with farmers and regulatory bodies to minimize pesticide usage and is dedicated to improving farming practices through training and support programs.

Stock Impact:

Following the recall announcement, KRBL Limited’s shares fell by 1.74% on September 27, 2024, as reported on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The recall has sparked concerns among investors, though the company remains committed to maintaining its reputation as a trusted leader in the food industry for over two decades.
