Gills Onions, a trusted provider of fresh diced onions, is voluntarily recalling specific products due to the potential contamination with Salmonella. The affected products have been associated with a widespread outbreak of Salmonella Thompson infections across 22 states.
The recall encompasses products distributed to the states of Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, all of which have use-by dates beyond August 2023. While these items may be stored in consumers’ freezers, we strongly advise against their consumption and encourage their immediate disposal.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are urged to refrain from consumption. To obtain further information or support, please contact Gills Onions at 800-348-2255 or visit our website at www.gillsonions.com for access to this press release and images of the recalled items.
This voluntary recall was initiated following notification from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) that the implicated products were identified during the agency’s trace-back investigation related to the ongoing Salmonella Thompson outbreak.
Gills Onions has also taken the necessary steps to inform its customers who directly received the recalled items, requesting their prompt removal from the market.
About Salmonella Infections:
Salmonella is a bacterial pathogen that can contaminate food without any visible signs of spoilage. It does not necessarily affect the taste, smell, or appearance of the product. Anyone, including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems, can contract a Salmonella infection. Those with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to severe illness.
If you have consumed any of the recalled products and subsequently experience symptoms associated with Salmonella infection, please seek medical attention. It is essential to inform your healthcare provider about the potential exposure to Salmonella bacteria, as specific tests are required for diagnosis. Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. Typically, healthy adults recover within a week. However, severe cases may require hospitalization.
Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals, are at greater risk of developing severe and life-threatening complications.
It’s worth noting that some individuals may be carriers of Salmonella without displaying any symptoms, potentially spreading the infection to others.
