Enoki mushrooms linked to Listeria outbreak in two states

In a recent update, consumers are being alerted to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in “enoki mushrooms” under the Qilu Enterprises brand. These mushrooms were distributed through Utopia Produce, situated at 83-18 72nd Drive in Glendale, New York. This advisory is issued by New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball and affects consumers in multiple states.

Affected States and Distribution: The affected Qilu Enterprises brand “enoki mushrooms” have been distributed in the following regions:

  • New York City
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • West Virginia

Product Details: The affected enoki mushrooms are packaged in 7.05-ounce (200-gram) flexible plastic bags and can be identified by the UPC code 928918-610109. The product also carries an expiration date of “Exp: October 26, 2023.”

Listeria Contamination Discovery: The presence of Listeria monocytogenes in these mushrooms was identified during routine sampling by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. Collaborating with regulatory partners, including the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, swift actions have been taken to remove the contaminated product from sale.

Consumer Actions: Consumers who have purchased the Qilu Enterprises brand “enoki mushrooms” are urged to return the product to the place of purchase. For any inquiries or concerns regarding the recalled product, consumers may reach out to Allison Wang, Import Manager, at 718-916-6089.

About Listeria Infections: Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and, in some cases, life-threatening infections. Importantly, food contaminated with Listeria may not show any signs of spoilage, making it essential for consumers to remain vigilant.

If you have consumed the recalled mushrooms and experience symptoms of Listeria infection, it is strongly advised to seek medical attention. Additionally, inform your healthcare provider about the potential Listeria exposure.

Listeria symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headaches, and neck stiffness. Diagnosis may require specific laboratory tests as these symptoms can resemble other illnesses.

It’s crucial to note that pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are at a higher risk of severe illness and life-threatening complications if exposed to Listeria. Even mild symptoms in pregnant women can lead to premature delivery, newborn infections, or stillbirth.

Consumers in the affected regions are encouraged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. Your health and safety are paramount, and swift actions can prevent potential health risks.
