Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. has initiated a recall of whole cucumbers shipped between May 17th and May 21st, 2024, due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall affects cucumbers distributed to retail centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors across multiple states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The recalled cucumbers, identified by their dark green color, are approximately 1.5 to 2.0 inches in diameter and 5 to 9 inches long. This recall does not include mini cucumbers or English cucumbers.
Salmonella is a serious health risk that can cause severe infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to more serious conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
The recall was prompted by a positive Salmonella test result from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if this contamination is linked to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak.
Consumers who may have purchased the recalled cucumbers are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should destroy and discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Customers should verify with their retailer if the cucumbers they bought are part of this recall.
Fresh Start Produce Sales has alerted all direct recipients of the affected cucumbers and requested the removal of the product from distribution. The company is working closely with the FDA to manage the recall and ensure consumer safety.
