What Is Imitation Crab and Should You Eat It?

Irvington Seafood, operating as ISF, Inc., has announced a recall of its 1 lb. packages of “Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat” due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall affects products distributed to retailers and restaurants in Alabama and Mississippi.

Recall Details

The recalled crabmeat, sold under the brand name “Irving Seafood,” comes in 1 lb. tubs marked with license number AL 111-C. The recall includes the following varieties:

  • Jumbo
  • Lump
  • Finger
  • Claw meat

Health Risk

Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals might experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. For pregnant women, Listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

Testing and Investigation

The contamination was discovered during routine testing. On May 17, 2024, Kevin Sakprasit of Irvington Seafood received the testing results from EMSL Analytical, Inc. The tests revealed that Batch #133, processed on May 12, 2024, tested positive for Listeria. Out of 94 samples taken on May 13, 14 tested positive, including 12 samples of Claw meat and 2 samples of Fingers.

Company Response

Irvington Seafood has voluntarily recalled the affected products to ensure consumer safety. Production has been suspended while the FDA and the company investigate the source of the contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled crabmeat are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further information, consumers can contact Irvington Seafood at 251-610-4159 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Central Time.
