Health Risks

Clostridium botulinum can produce a toxin in food that may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious illness. Symptoms of botulism in adults include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Difficulty speaking, including slurred speech
  • Change in the sound of voice, including hoarseness

Symptoms in children can include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Slurred speech
  • Generalized weakness and paralysis

Botulism does not cause a fever, and severe cases can be fatal.

What To Do?
