Snapchill LLC has initiated a nationwide recall of hundreds of coffee products due to concerns over potential contamination with the deadly botulinum toxin. These products, sold under various coffee roaster names, have been identified as having low acid levels, which can promote the growth of this toxin.
Reason for the Recall: The recall, announced voluntarily by Snapchill, was prompted after it was discovered that the manufacturing process resulted in low acid conditions in the canned coffee products. This environment is conducive to the growth of botulinum, a toxin that can cause botulism, a severe and sometimes fatal
Botulism is caused by a toxin produced by certain bacteria. It can lead to muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties, and can be fatal. Symptoms can appear anywhere from six hours to two weeks after consumption of contaminated food. Common symptoms include constipation, abdominal distension, and in severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure. Immediate medical attention is required if botulism is suspected.
Recalled Coffee Products: More than 250 products are being recalled, each associated with different coffee roaster names, including Alchemy Roasting and Wild Goose Coffee. These products were sold in metal cans ranging from 7 oz to 12 oz, and can be identified by the label “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” under the nutrition facts panel. Some products may also have “Snapchill Coffee” printed on them.

A spokesperson for Snapchill stated, “Snapchill has provided a wide range of roasters nationwide with ‘Snapchill’ cold coffee since 2019, without any known consumer cases of botulism. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified Snapchill that the low acid canned foods process for manufacturing the recalled products was not filed with FDA, as is required by regulation. There is a possibility that the current manufacturing process could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods. No illnesses have been reported, and Snapchill is not aware of any instances in which the company’s products contained this pathogen. Nevertheless, Snapchill is voluntarily conducting this recall in cooperation with the FDA.
“At Snapchill, the safety and satisfaction of our customers are our highest priorities, and we are working swiftly to resolve the issue. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this recall may cause. We are working with the FDA on solutions to restart production within standards.”
