The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated a recall involving Marabou Sea Salt Chocolate Bars produced by BonBon NYC LLC, classifying it as a “Class 1” recall. This is the most serious classification the FDA assigns, indicating that there is a reasonable probability that consumption of the product could lead to serious health consequences or even death.

The recall, first initiated earlier this summer, was prompted by undeclared allergens, including wheat, almonds, and other nuts, that were not listed on the product packaging. These allergens pose a significant risk to individuals with severe food allergies or sensitivities.

The affected product is the Marabou Sea Salt Chocolate Bar, a flat, 185-gram chocolate bar packaged in yellow wrapping with the word “havssalt” (Swedish for “sea salt”). The bars were sold at BonBon’s retail locations in New York City at:

  • 130 Allen St.
  • 1220 Lexington Ave.
  • 705 Driggs Ave.

BonBon NYC LLC, in cooperation with the FDA, has removed the products from their shelves and destroyed them at all locations. No illnesses have been reported so far, but consumers who purchased the affected product are urged not to consume it and to return it to the store for a refund.

The FDA has been actively addressing food safety concerns throughout September, including recalls of products such as 7-Eleven Fudge Brownies, Dark Chocolate Filled Mini Waffle Cones, whole cantaloupes, and eggs, all due to undeclared allergens or contamination risks.
