Surface-ripened soft and semi-soft cheeses in Canada have been recalled owing to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recalled product was offered for sale in Quebec, and other provinces and territories.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes deadly infections in young children, the elderly, and others with compromised immune systems. Although healthy people may only experience short-term symptoms such as a high temperature, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can result in miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
