Campylobacter in Unpasteurized milk: Milk Recalled

September 19, 2024 New Zealand

Arran Trust is recalling specific batches of its Arran Farm brand Raw Drinking Milk (unpasteurised) due to the potential presence of Campylobacter, a harmful bacteria known to cause foodborne illness.

Health Risk:
Campylobacter infection can result in symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms usually develop within 2-5 days after consuming contaminated food and can last for up to a week. In some cases, it can lead to severe illness, particularly for vulnerable individuals like young children, pregnant women, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

Product Description and Distribution:

  • The affected product is sold as Arran Farm Raw Drinking Milk (Unpasteurised).
  • The milk is packaged in 1-litre glass bottles or in customer-supplied containers.
  • The product was sold from a vending machine located at Arran Farm Milk Shop, 174 Taonui Road, RD 5, Feilding.
  • It has not been exported and is only distributed locally from the farm.

Consumer Advice:

  • Do not consume this product if purchased between the listed dates.
  • If you have this product, return it to Arran Farm Shop for a full refund.
  • Alternatively, if you choose to consume the milk, heat it to 70°C and hold it at this temperature for one minute before drinking. If a thermometer is not available, heat the milk until it nearly reaches boiling point (scald the milk) to reduce the risk of illness.
  • If you have consumed the milk and are experiencing any symptoms of Campylobacter infection, such as diarrhea, stomach pain, or fever, seek medical advice immediately.

How to Reduce the Risk of Illness from Raw Milk:

  • Raw, unpasteurised milk poses a higher risk of carrying harmful bacteria like Campylobacter, E. coli, and Salmonella.
  • To minimize risks, always heat raw milk before consuming.
