Costco Recalls Butternut Squash Due to E. coli Contamination

September 21, 2023 USA

Escherichia coli: symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

Costco has issued a recall for fresh-cut butternut squash sold in its stores, following concerns of potential E. coli contamination. New Jersey-based food manufacturer Safeway Fresh Foods of Vineland, NJ, initiated the recall after routine testing at their lab uncovered the contamination. Costco shoppers who may have purchased the affected product, specifically 2-pound plastic clamshell containers of pre-cut organic butternut squash, from Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia locations between September 7 and September 15, 2023, are advised to take immediate action.

The contaminated items can be identified by the number #20522 located above the barcode. However, only butternut squash with the “09/19/2023” date code is affected by this recall. Consumers who possess products with this date code are urged not to consume them and are advised to return the items to their local Costco stores for a full refund, as stated by Howard Willis, Safeway Fresh Foods Director of Food Safety.

E. coli Infection Symptoms and Risks

Individuals who have consumed the recalled butternut squash and subsequently experience symptoms associated with E. coli infection are strongly encouraged to seek medical attention promptly. These symptoms can vary from person to person but frequently include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and, in some cases, fever.

It’s essential for affected individuals to inform their healthcare providers about their possible exposure to the bacteria, as specific tests are required for a definitive diagnosis. E. coli infections can mimic other illnesses, making accurate diagnosis critical.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most patients with E. coli infections recover within five to seven days. However, around 5 to 10 percent may develop a potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Symptoms of HUS include fever, abdominal pain, fatigue, decreased urination frequency, minor unexplained bruising or bleeding, and pallor.

HUS can be particularly dangerous for certain demographics, including children under five with immature immune systems, older adults with deteriorating immune systems, and individuals with compromised immune systems, such as cancer patients.

Immediate Medical Attention for HUS Symptoms

Anyone experiencing symptoms of HUS should seek emergency medical care without delay. Hospitalization is often necessary, as HUS can lead to severe and ongoing health issues, including hypertension, chronic kidney disease, brain damage, and neurological problems.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and prompt response to potential health risks. Costco and Safeway Fresh Foods are actively cooperating with health authorities to ensure the safety of consumers, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops. Shoppers are encouraged to check their purchased butternut squash products for the specified date code and barcode number to determine if they are part of the recall.
