In response to the detection of the Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus at two South Australian growing properties, Biosecurity New Zealand has announced a temporary suspension of all tomato imports from Australia. This suspension, effective immediately, will be reviewed in seven days.

Deputy Director-General Stuart Anderson stated, “We met with our Australian counterparts this afternoon to get an update on their response to the virus detection. Australia is actively working on tracing material, and as a precautionary measure, we are extending our import restrictions to include all Australian states. This is a precautionary step while the situation is being thoroughly investigated.”

Previously, Biosecurity New Zealand had restricted imports from states other than Queensland. However, given the recent virus detection in South Australia, the suspension has now been extended nationwide.

“Our imported tomatoes currently come exclusively from Queensland, and so far, no affected material has been traced to this region. Nonetheless, we believe it’s prudent to be cautious while Australian authorities continue their tracing efforts,” Anderson added.

The Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus causes yellowing and deformity in tomato plants but poses no risk to human health. Biosecurity New Zealand is committed to working closely with the tomato sector in New Zealand and urges growers to remain vigilant with their biosecurity practices.
