Allergy Alert on Undeclared Egg in Paw Paw and Harvest Pumpkin Gelato from Zingerman’s Creamery in the USA
In order to be safe for consumers, Zingerman’s Creamery in Ann Arbor, Michigan is recalling 173 pints of Paw Paw Gelato, 50 quarts of Paw Paw Gelato, 58 pints of Harvest Pumpkin Gelato, and 10 quarts of Harvest Pumpkin Gelato. Consuming these items increases the risk of a serious or fatal allergic reaction in people who are allergic to eggs or have a severe sensitivity to them. To date, no illnesses have been reported. The following lots have been recalled: Paw Paw (220916, 220928, 221005, and 221012). Harvest Pumpkin (220909, 220919, 220928).
The Paw Paw and Harvest Pumpkin Gelato comes in two different containers: a paper pint and a transparent plastic quart, both of which have stickers with the flavors Paw Paw and Harvest Pumpkin written in green and orange, respectively. The brand Zingerman’s is imprinted on the blue pints.The top left corner of the nutrition label contains the lot number. The recall was started when it was discovered that Paw Paw and Harvest Pumpkin Gelato, which included Egg was sold in containers with Egg listed as an allergen under the produced in facility but not on the ingredients or allergen statement. To increase the overall quality of gelato bases, Zingerman’s Creamery altered the recipes earlier this year to add egg yolk. The results of further analysis show that human error in labelling was the root of the issue.
