Some tea items are being voluntarily recalled by the Chai Box due to possible Clostridium botulinum contamination. The goods were delivered nationwide.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture conducted an investigation and found the issue with the “Chai Concentrate Mix” and “Unsweetened Chai Concentrate Mix” that The Chai Box has recalled. These errors occurred during the commercial sterilization process and could cause contamination with pathogens or rotting organisms, which, if consumed, could result in a life-threatening illness. Specifically, the products are being recalled “due to potential under-processing.

This recall does not affect any additional production codes or goods. It is significant to highlight that this product has not yet been linked to any illnesses.

Clostridium Botulinum:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service claims that one of the neurotoxins produced by the rod-shaped bacteria C. botulinum during growth is “among the most hazardous chemicals known” (FSIS). The neurotoxin can cause botulism, a potentially fatal paralysing condition that can harm the nerve system, if consumed. Although there have been instances where the symptoms started to show as early as four hours and as late as eight days after consuming contaminated food, generally speaking, symptoms begin to develop 12 to 36 hours after consuming the meal. The severity of the condition increases with the onset of the symptoms, according to the FSIS. “An antitoxin and prompt medical attention are required for treatment.” The earliest signs of botulism can include nausea, vertigo, weakness, and vomiting. Then, neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms, such as blurred vision and poor motor coordination, may appear.
