Costco and its supplier, Acme Smoked Fish Corp., have issued a recall for Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon due to the potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall affects specific packages of smoked salmon purchased between October 9 and October 13, 2024. Consumers are urged to check their purchases for lot number 8512801270. If the affected product is found, customers should dispose of it immediately or return it to their nearest Costco store for a full refund.
Though no illnesses have been reported so far, Listeria can pose serious health risks, especially for pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the infection may spread to the nervous system, causing meningitis or other complications.
Acme Smoked Fish Corp., which supplies the salmon to Costco, initiated the recall after discovering potential listeria contamination in its product during routine testing. In an official statement, CEO Eduardo Carbajosa expressed regret over the incident:
“We regret this unfortunate situation and have taken immediate corrective steps to prevent it from recurring.”
What is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness. It thrives in refrigerated environments, making products like smoked fish particularly susceptible. To reduce the risk of infection, consumers should follow food safety guidelines, such as proper refrigeration and handling of ready-to-eat products.
Costco is advising all customers to remain vigilant and to avoid consuming the recalled product. For further information, customers can contact Costco’s customer service or visit the company’s website.
